The Aligarh Muslim University has approached police for tracing the origin of an e-mail purportedly from former vice chancellor Professor P K Abdul Azis posted on a number of network sites connected with AMU.
Professor Azis has denied any connection with the controversial e-mail and has described it as a serious matter.
The contents of the mail contain highly derogatory comments against a senior university professor.
A formal FIR is being lodged at civil lines police station, AMU spokesman Rahat Abrar said on Friday.
"I have heard about this and as soon as formalities are completed, the matter will be handed over to the SP (Cyber Crime), Agra, under whose jurisdiction the matter lies," Senior Superintendent of Police Satendra Vir Singh said
