AP's excise policy turned two crore people into habitual drinkers: BJP

Says state should now concentrate on campaigning on the ill-effects of alcohol

PTI | June 14, 2010

Strongly criticising the excise policy of Andhra Pradesh, BJP today alleged that the policy has made two crore people habitual drinkers at present.

"Instead of providing a good administration, the policy of the Congress government seems to be providing liquor at the door step of common man," state BJP official spokesperson V Srinivas Raju told presspersons here.

Consumption of liquor on a large scale by youth was leading to increase in crime rate including rape incidents in the state, Raju alleged.

The State government is totally dependent on liquor sales for its revenue, he alleged.

Emphasising the need to set up a committee under an IAS officer to propagate about evils of liquor consumption, the BJP leader said 10 per cent of revenue of the Excise Department should be alloted for the campaign committee.

Raju said the government should take measures for imposing prohibition on sale and consumption in a phased manner.
