The Civil Aviation ministry has said it had constituted a committee to study the problems faced by passengers with disabilities and reduced mobility in undertaking air travel and suggest ways to make facilities more convenient for them.

The ministry said in a statement that the Committee on 'Rights of Passengers with Disabilities and Reduced Mobility' has been asked to give its report in eight weeks for consideration of the ministry.

The Committee will function under the chairmanship of G.Asok Kumar, Joint Secretary, Ministry of Civil Aviation.

Representatives of Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), Airport Authority of India (AAI), Bureau of Civil Aviation Security (BCAS), airlines and organizations working for persons with disability or reduced mobility will be the other members.

The Aviation ministry has formed the Committee after at least three cases related to harassment of differently-abled passengers during air-travel were reported in the last two years.

In the last reported incident in February this year, Jeeja Ghosh, a person with cerebral palsy, was de-boarded from a Spicejet flight in Kolkata.

"The Committee will look into the different aspects related to differently-abled people and persons with disability," the ministry said.

These include modification in the Civil Aviation Requirement (CAR) in line with the improved guidelines adopted in other developed countries and resolution of United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UNCRPD), the ministry said in its statement.
