Bihar gets Rs 4,000 cr from World Bank for rehab porgramme

World Bank clears the amount against the state's demand for Rs 14,000 for rehabilitation in flood-affected Kosi belt

PTI | May 4, 2010

The World Bank has cleared Rs 4,000 crore for Bihar against the state's demand for Rs 14,000 crore for undertaking rehabilitation programme for the Kosi river belt, devastated by floods in 2008, state govt officials said today.

While Rs 3200 crore would be used for reconstruction activities, Rs 800 crore would be used for rehabilitation, sources said.

A majority of the amount would be extended in soft loans, whereas a marginal sum would be provided as a grant-in-aid, they said.

The exact modalities of the loan would be worked out when the representatives of the Centre, state government and the World Bank would meet in June.

Lakhs of people were rendered homeless because of the devastation caused by river Kosi after it breached its embankment at Kusaha in Nepal and charted a new course in 2008.
