BJP accuses govt of growing intolerance citing uproar in LS

BJP leader compares pandemonium to opposition gagging during Emergency

PTI | April 15, 2010

BJP today cited the uproar created by some Congress members in Lok Sabha during the debate on Dantewada naxal attack to accuse the government of growing intolerance and an attempt to gag the opposition, alleging it was this which led to the Emergency.

"This is the first time that we were witness to a spectacle where the ruling party repeatedly disrupted the House and it had to be adjourned. And this happened in the presence of UPA chairperson and leader of the House," senior BJP leader Yashwant Sinha told reporters.

Sinha was speaking during the debate on Dantewada incident where 76 security personnel were killed by naxals.

The Congress members were on their feet against some comments of Sinha.

However, an unfazed Sinha told reporters that this was an instance of intolerance.

"Even the two parliamentary affairs minister P K Bansal and V Narayansamy (MoS) were disrupting the House. How can Parliamentary system function if opposition is gagged. I was not making a personal statement," Sinha said.

At one point during his speech in Lok Sabha Sinha told the Treasury Benches sarcastically that they should write the script of the opposition leaders.

"It does not augur well for future of Parliamentary democracy. We are inching towards intolerance. It was this intolerance that led to Emergency," Sinha said. .
