The ruling BJP in Karnataka today asked the Centre to amend Article 371 to provide for special economic powers to remove regional imbalance in parts of North Karnataka and opposed appointment of a tribunal to adjudicate sharing of Mahadayi river water with Goa.

After the party's two-day state level executive meeting, BJP spokesman C T Ravi told reporters that a resolution urged Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa to lead a delegation to Delhi to press for an amendment to Article 371 of the Constitution to seek special economic powers to North Karnataka Region.

The meeting in another resolution assailed Centre's move to set up a tribunal over the Mahadayi river water sharing issue, succumbing to pressures from Goa, and warned of an agitation if the adjudicating body was set up,he said.

The BJP wanted the Centre to accord early clearance for the Kalasa-Bandori Nala drinking water project which envisages utilisation of 7.5 tmc ft of Mahadayi water, which Goa has been objecting to.

Ravi said the meeting asked the Yeddyurappa government to appoint a senior minister to monitor the progress of relief works undertaken to flood affected following tardy progress.

In another resolution, the meeting slammed the opposition parties accusing them of misusing Raj Bhavan and also took exception to certain remarks reportedly made by Governor H R Bhardwaj about the government.

The government should take steps to honour all its promises made during 2008 assembly polls including adding 5,000 mw of power to the state's grid, Ravi said.
