BMC has issued evacuation notices to owners of 876 dilapidated buildings in the city, almost 90 per cent of which are in south Mumbai.

A pre-monsoon survey conducted by BrihanMumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) said 876 buildings, including those owned by it, Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (MHADA) and private individuals, are dilapidated.

Of the 876 dilapidated buildings, the civic body has identified 24 MHADA-owned buildings as the "most vulnerable".

It has issued notices to owners of all dilapidated buildings, asking them to evacuate.

It has also identified five municipal schools as temporary shelters in each of the 24 wards in the city.

The civic body has handed over the list of these buildings to fire brigade department asking it to recee the areas where they are situated and sought building plan in the eventuality of rescue operations.

Of the total 876, 291 are cessed (constructed before 1940), 429 non-cessed and 156 are BMC-owned buildings.
