Central govt staff may soon retire at 62

Central govt employees' union says decision will cause number of vacancies to reduce further

GN Bureau | May 27, 2013

The union government is seriously deliberating on increasing the retirement age of central government employees to 62 from the existing 60.

Ahead of the Lok Sabha elections, scheduled for early next year, the decision, the poll strategists in the ruling party think, will reap rich electoral dividends.

Babus in the North Block which houses the finance ministry, are ecstatic at the impending decision for it will help them accumulate pension for two more years.
Another reason for this decision, as and when it is taken, is to put the next government in a fiscal tight-spot.

The confederation of central government employees said the decision “if it is taken at all” would be disastrous. “It will increase unemployment as the number of vacancies will reduce further,” said R N Parashar, a member of the confederation.

“I do not think the government will take this populist decision and if it does we will oppose it,” he said.
