Centre, UP in blame game over Bareilly violence

Train gutted in violence over the death of fifteen youth who fell from the roof of a train

The centre and UP government today indulged in a blame game over the train tragedy and violence during an ITBP recruitment camp with home minister P Chidambaram saying that minimum security was provided despite state police being informed well in advance.

The Uttar Pradesh government, however, claimed that ITBP and the centre did not coordinate with the state on the recruitment camp and termed Chidambaram's statement as "untrue" and "far from facts". It blamed alleged "mismanagement" of ITBP for the "chaos".

"The incident was unfortunate, but the ITBP did not inform the Bareilly administration that applications have been invited from 11 states," a UP government spokesman said in Lucknow, adding the ITBP should have given a special information in this regard.

He alleged that the ITBP failed to assess that such a large number of applicants will turn up for the recruitment drive.

UP special DGP Brij Lal said around 1.5 lakh job aspirants turned up this morning. "A large number of aspirants were called by the ITBP authorities but they did not coordinate with the local administration. This led to chaos," he said, adding adequate PAC and police were deployed to restore calm.

In a statement, the ITBP said the force's DIG at Bareilly had duly informed the district magistrate on January 17 about the recruitment drive.

Chidambaram said the state police was obliged to provide security to any kind of recruitment camp and such a programme is not held without the knowledge of the state police.

"These were done with the full knowledge and consent of state police," he said in New Delhi.

15 youths were killed and several others injured when they fell from the roof of two speeding trains crammed with job aspirants returning from the ITBP recruitment camp in Bareilly. The incidents triggered violent protests as angry youths torched a train.

Earlier in the day, thousands of ITBP aspirants went on a rampage in Bareilly torching a number of vehicles after they failed to submit their forms . They set ablaze seven buses, five of them belonging to the state roadways, some two-wheelers and a petrol pump, officials said.
