Chhattishargh seeks Padma for its farmers

State says farmers who braved through the downturn are the real heroes

The Chattisgarh government has decided to recommend farmers for the Padma awards.

The state's agriculture minister Chandrashekhar Sahu today said that the state government will recommend names of successful farmers for the Padma Bhushan, Padma Vibhushan and Padma Shri awards and would invite proposals from the Centre in this regard.

"Farmers, who even during economic recession have maintained nation's pride, should also be awarded with Padma awards just like those working in other specific areas," Sahu said adding when given an opportunity, the state government will recommend farmers name only on priority bases.

Sahu and farmer welfare and agriculture development minister of Madhya Pradesh Ramkrishna Kusmaria had earlier sought Padma Vibhushan and Padma Shri awards to farmers on the lines of awards given for outstanding performance.
