Union Home Minister P Chidambaram is likely to arrive here this afternoon to review the security situation in the region at a high-level meeting, official sources said today.

Chidambaram, accompanied by Union Home Secretary G K Pillai, is scheduled to hold a meeting with Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi followed by another with the unified command structure members here.

The Home Minister is set to discuss the ongoing counter- insurgency operations in the state, Maoist threat to the state, the latest boundary clash between Assam and Meghalaya at Langpi, modernisation of Assam police and other issues.

Chidambaram is scheduled to arrive here from Mizoram where he had gone to review the repatriation of Bru refugees to the state from Tripura, they added.

Shillong (PTI) Meghalaya Chief Minister Mukul Sangma has moved Union Home Minister P Chidambaram seeking Centre's intervention in resolving the long-pending boundary dispute with Assam.

In the wake of the firing incident at the disputed Langpih area on May 14 in which four people were killed, Sangma called on Chidambaram on Saturday last in New Delhi and discussed the issue, apprising him of the latest developments.

"The Home Minister is aware of the problem. He acknowledged that the issues have been pending for years now," Sangma told reporters here last night after returning to the state.

He sought Centre's involvement for "an expeditious settlement of the dispute in the best interest of people."

On the Langpih incident, Sangma said he impressed upon the Home Minister to institute an independent probe.

"The incident was uncalled for. I have reason to believe that the Assam police action that led to loss of four lives was excessive. And that is why we have demanded an independent inquiry," Sangma said.

He claimed the Home Minister "justified" the demand of inquiry and assured of consulting the Assam Government and pursuing the matter.

The chief minister said he has also sought a detailed report from the Assam government about the Langpih incident.

Four people were killed in group clashes and subsequent firing by Assam Police at Langpih along the Assam-Meghalaya border on May 14.
