Covering up elephants? Think of the children!

Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi's sage advice to the election commission

GN Bureau | January 17, 2012

Ever since the election commission (EC) decided that statues of elephants and Mayawati in Uttar Pradesh need to be covered in light of the coming assembly elections, Digvijay Singh and every one else have had a field day mocking the EC's logic with their list of things that need a cover or otherwise removed from the picture. Hands, lotuses and cycles, among other things, figure on the lists.

Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi is the latest in the fray. Modi, with his tongue firmly in his cheek, tweeted on Tuesday, "Centre makes bravery-award winning children sit on elephants during 26th Jan parade. Doesn't that violate model code of conduct?"

Witty Modi took it further, tweeting immediately after, "Will Congress ask for elephants to be removed? What will happen to Live TV coverage? So ridiculous...(sic)".

Ouch! That should sting the EC and the Congress (which supported the 'cover drive') bad.

Some would say that the pro-cover crowd is making an ass of itself over elephants!
