Delhi is India's most livable city, Jamshedpur the worst

Mumbai comes second, followed by Bangalore, Hyderabad, Chennai

GN Bureau | March 6, 2010

The national capital is the most livable city in the country while Jamshedpur is at the bottom of the list, according to a report on the livability of Indian cities.

The report brought out by the Institute for Competitiveness, a Gurgaon-based think-tank, lists Mumbai as a close second to Delhi based on livability indices calculated for socio-political environment, education, health infrastructure, economic environment, natural environment, housing and three other criteria.

The top ten of the 37 cities on the list include all four metros apart from Gurgaon, Hyderabad, Bengaluru, Ahmedabad and Pune.

What may come as a surprise, though, is the fact that the report names Delhi as the safest city while  Noida comes right after Gurgaon as the most unsafe city.

Delhi also beats Mumbai as the city with the best economic environment. The top three spots for health go to Kozhikode, Thiruvananthapuram and Kochi in Kerala.

With some of the country's finest schools, best universities and one of the select group of institutes for technological education, Delhi tops the list of the cities, ranked according to the educational infrastructure provided.
