Stressing upon the need of improvement of healthcare and infrastructure in rural areas, former President A P J Abdul Kalam today called upon doctors to come forward for development of medical services in this sector.

He also suggested doctors to prescribe only needful treatment instead of unnecessary and costly medicines in order to provide relief to common people and avoid side-effects.

Delivering his key note address at the 'Indo-American Health Summit' here, Kalam said the benefits of scientific inventions and researches must reach to common people through doctors.

Heart diseases, oral cancer, blindness and child care should be given due attention especially in rural areas, he said.

Kalam also pointed out towards the need of awareness among people for health care.

"Though there have been new developments, advanced studies in the field of medial sciences, but still a lot of work has to be done to create awareness among people on healthcare," Kalam said.

The three-day summit is being organised here by the Association of American Physicians of India origin (AAPI) in association with the Rajasthan government.
