The Delhi University (DU) has sought more time from atomic regulator AERB to submit its final reply on the radiation exposure incident in the national capital in April.

Exposure to radioactive material Cobalt-60 in the scrap market in Mayapuri, in west Delhi, had led to the death of one person and injuries to some others. Later it came to light that the Cobalt-60 originated from the Gamma Irradiator which the university had auctioned to a scrap dealer.

Atomic Energy Regulatory Board (AERB) had issued a show cause notice to DU for violating "safe disposal of radioactive waste and radiation protection rules".

Two representatives from the university, who attended a meeting of AERB's Standing Committee, that reviews unusual occurrences in radiation facilities, here yesterday asked for more time to give a final report on the radiation exposure episode, AERB officials said today.

The reason given given by them was that the committee set up by the university to investigate the case has not yet submitted its report to DU authorities, they said.

"We are consulting our legal experts on whether we could give more time to the university to submit its final report," the officials told PTI.

AERB had received a preliminary reply from the Delhi University on May 13.
