On the occasion of safe motherhood day on Monday, municipal corporation of Delhi (MCD) launched an e-governance project for all maternity homes under it.

The new project will will store electronically information like the patient's date of admission, disease history, treatment given and the date of discharge

This move will benefit not only doctors but pregnant women as well who are seeking treatment from the MCD maternity homes. This, the officials claim, will help in tracking the patients for ante-natal care and keep them updated about the immunisation of their children. The new plan will also help them keep a track of the drop-out rate of children on immunisation.

According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), 5,29,000 maternal deaths occur in the world each year out of which 1,36,000 (25.7 percent) are in India. Major causes of maternal mortality in India are anemia, unsafe abortions, severe bleeding, infections, eclampsia and obstructed labour which can be easily prevented.
