Editors to discuss declaration of assets

Issue on the agenda of the Editors Guild meet

GN Bureau | December 24, 2010

Responding to the revelation of the nexus between corporate lobbyists, media professionals and politicians through the leaked Niira Radia tapes, the Editors Guild of India is set to discuss declaration of assets by the editors in its meeting on Friday evening. "The issues arising out of Radia tapes is on the agenda. Declaration of assets is part of this," Rajdeep Sardesai, president of the Editors Guild told Governance Now.

The idea was mooted as a poser by a journalist at a panel discussion on media ethics at the Press Club in New Delhi on December 3. Sardesai had then replied that he would be willing to declare his assets and discuss it at the next meeting of the Editors Guild, which has as its members editors from across the country and deals with issues including ethics and freedom of the media.

Sardesai had come under fierce attack at the panel discussion from fellow journalists for maintaining that Vir Sanghvi and Barkha Dutt could not be deemed guilty until a quid pro quo was established. The audience also took strong exception to Sardesai's suggestion that the uproar against the embattled journalists sprang from envy rather than any evidence of wrongdoing.
