Thousands of farmers from several villages in the district today dumped paddy on a road in front of the Collectorate here, irked by the government's reported indifference to meet their demands.

The farmers rallied under the banner of Federation of Farmers Associations of Karaikal District with the support of various political parties.

Former Puducherry minister Kamalakannan, who led the stir, told reporters later that the government had not opened paddy procurement centres despite repeated appeals, forcing farmers to sell their produce to private parties in Tamil Nadu for very low price.
