Govt to create Rs 74,000 cr market for energy efficient products

Cabinet to clear energy mission this week

The government may approve this week the National Mission on Enhanced Energy Efficiency - aimed at building Rs 74,000-crore market for energy efficient products - this week, according to Ajay Mathur, the bureau of energy efficiency director.

"The National Mission on Enhanced Energy Efficiency (NMEEE) may get cabinet approval this week," Mathur said in New Delhi on Tuesday.

The government hopes to implement the scheme from April 1, 2010.

The programme (NMEEE) is one of the eight missions planned under the National Action Plan on Climate Change.

The key feature of the programme is to upscale efforts to create a market for energy efficiency products estimated to be around Rs 74,000 crore.

It  also seeks to create a conducive regulatory and policy regime for fostering innovative and sustainable business models to unlock this market.
