Jabbardan Gadhvi sought details of ancestral land

GN Bureau | February 22, 2011

A farmer set himself on fire in Rajkot on Monday after he was repeatedly denied information under the right to information (RTI) act.

Jabbardan Gadhvi (45) set himself on fire in front of the state revenue office in the presence of 11 policemen. He died on the spot.

Gadhvi had filed RTI applications with the local government departments seeking details about his ancestral land in Dhavdi. “He had discovered that some people had sold his land which was around 400 acre. He wanted to know that who owned that land,” said Ahmedababd based RTI activist Vinod Pandya.

When the authorities did not provide him with the details, Dhadvi first sat on fast and then immolated himself.

Dhavdi village's official Pravina Jadhav has been suspended in this regard.

Police has lodged FIR against Jhadav, revenue officer Anirudhsinh Zala, and sub-inspector R G Parmar.
