State asks polluting industrial clusters for action plan to contain pollution before seeking a revoking of investment ban

PTI | March 24, 2010

Polluting industrial clusters in Gujarat banned from accepting fresh investment for now, have been asked to draw an action plan to contain pollution, the state principal secretary at the forests and environment department S K Nanda said on Tuesday.

The state would review the action plan before sending it to the central government agencies and seek withdrawal of the ban, he said.

"Associations representing cluster like Chitra in Bhavnagar, Sambalpur in Junagadh, Nandesari in Vadodara, Odhav, Narol, Vatva and Naroda in Ahmedabad have been asked to draft an action plan which shall be reviewed in August," he added.

After review of the action plan, it will be sent to the central agencies like Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) and plead for uplifting the ban on making fresh investments in these clusters, Nanda said.

Industry sources said the first notification from the Union ministry of environment and forests that identified few cities in Gujarat as critically polluting areas had put brakes on proposed investments to the tune of Rs 10,000 crore.
