Half of urban development funds gone to Delhi metro and CWG

Other projects not getting adequate funds

GN Bureau | April 23, 2010

Over half of this year’s plan budget of the union ministry of urban development has e been utilised by just two projects - the Commonwealth Games 2010 and the Delhi Metro.

The ministry’s standing committee recently submitted the ministry’s report for grants in the Lok Sabha. As per the report, around 54 percent of Rs 5,457.84 crore was allocated to these two projects.

The committee doubted if “the ministry would be in a position to do justice to the other equally significant issues with hardly any funds in hand."

The committee was of the view that several important projects were not getting due priority as their funds were either dropped or saw a marginal increase. “'Water supply and sanitation' head has dropped from Rs 191.25 crore in 2004-05 to nil this year, as last year's unused funds of Rs 12.56 crore have just been carried forward," it noted.
