I will not seek pardon, says Sanjay Dutt

With tears in eye, the actor says he will surrender in time

GN Bureau | March 28, 2013

An emotionally choked bollywood actor Sanjay Dutt, for the first time, clarified that he will not seek pardon and will surrender in time. The supreme court, on March 21, sentenced him to five-year imprisonment under the Arms Act. He has already served 18 months in jail in the 1993 Mumbai bomb blasts case.

"I have not applied for pardon. There are many others who deserve it... All I want to say is that I am a law-abiding citizen of this country.” With his hands folded he said, “I want to tell the media and people when I am not going for a pardon, there should be no debate about it. Right now, I am a shattered man but I have respect for the supreme court. I will surrender in time. I love my country and the citizens of my country," said actor Dutt, while speaking to the media outside his residence in Mumbai.

Several celebrities, including press council of India Chairman Markandey Katju and actor-turned-politicians Jaya Bachchan and Shatrughan Sinha have sought pardon for Sanjay Dutt.

After addressing the media, he did not take any questions from the reporters and hugged his sister and Lok Sabha member Priya Dutt.
