Students held a voting on amending Vice Chancellor's tenure

GN Bureau | April 21, 2010

Students of Jawaharlal Nehru University held a student's referendum on Tuesday over the issue of amending the JNU statutes to extend a Vice-Chancellor's tenure beyond one term.

The "Referendum Committee" consisting of senior students of the campus conducted a day-long voting on Tuesday and counting of votes took place late on Tuesday night. Anoop, a student of JNU and member of All India Stdents' Association (AISA), said,"The counting has been completed. And 94 percent students have declared that they do not want the VC's term to be extended."

The JNU Teachers' Association and many student groups have been opposing the move to amend the JNU statutes to give the V-C another term. Students said they will submit the mandate results to members of the JNU Executive Council which is due to meet on April 27.

The student bodies which participated in this included The All-India Democratic Students' Organisation, AISA, Democratic Students' Union, National Students' Union of India (NSUI), Progressive Students' Union and Students' Federation of India (SFI).
