Kumar tipped to replace incumbent DG Vikram Shrivastava

K VIjay Kumar is being tipped to become director general of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) to boost the morale of the troopers in the aftermath of the bloodbath in Chhattisgarh on Tuesday.

A political decision at the highest level was taken on Tuesday night to find a suitable replacement to the incumbent CRPF DG,Vikram Srivastava.

However, administrative procedure to propose Vijay Kumar's name to the cabinet committee on appointments can take a week or 10 days.

K Vijay Kumar, the senior most IPS officer of 1975 seniority of Tamil Nadu cadre, is currently the director general of the National Police Academy, Hyderabad.

He has worked as a field officer and tracked down militants and terrorists. It was Vijay Kumar who cornered sandalwood smuggler Veerappan.

Vijay Kumar has worked in SPG, held the position of the Chennai police commissioner. He has 30 months to retire.

When P Chidambaram assumed office as home minister, Vijay Kumar was his choice for the post of Delhi Police commissioner.

Meanwhile, a decision will have to be taken to find a suitable position for Vikram Shrivastava, who faces allegations of making changes in his birth certificate to hide his real age -- his "younger" brother will retire in January 2011 while he would elder will retire in 2013.
