Lankan navy's 'attack' on fishermen angers Tamil Nadu

The fishermen's boats were pelted with stones and bottles to prevent them from crossing the international maritime border

GN Bureau | February 7, 2012

The Tamil Nadu government has demanded that the centre intervene after 600 fishing boats returned to shore near Rameswaram without any catch after they were pelted with stones and bottles by some personnnel of the Sri Lankan navy as they veered close to the International maritime boundary line near, Kathchathivu, the state fisheries department officials said on Tuesday.

The chief secretary explained the state's concerns over the incident in a fax message to the union ministries of home, external affairs and defence.

Stones and glass pieces were found strewn in more than 30 boats, and fishermen in more than 600 boats had to return last night without fishing. Katchathivu is an islet ceded to Sri Lanka by India in 1974.

The fishermen claimed they could not get any fish in the Indian waters.
