Maha House ruckus over Shivaji book, border dispute with K'taka

PTI | July 12, 2010

On the first day of Maharashtra Legislative Council, the House was adjourned twice on issues of Maharashtra-Karnataka border row and the Supreme Court's decision of lifting ban on American author James Laine's book on Chhatrapati Shivaji.

The opposition Shiv Sena-BJP members demanded immediate discussion on the issues keeping aside the entire agenda of the House for today.

PWP leader Jayant Patil moved an adjournment notice on the border row demanding immediate discussion. "The Centre filed an affidavit against the sentiments of Marathi people in the Supreme Court and the State Government should clear its role on the issue," Patil said.

Supporting the motion, Leader of Opposition Pandurang Phundkar said the issue is long pending and many protests and resolutions have been passed on it.

"Despite the Congress-led Government ruling at the Centre and the state, there is difference of opinion on the issue," Phundkar said.

Shiv Sena leader Diwakar Raote asked if the State Government is serious about the issue. In reply, Revenue Minister Narayan Rane said the Government is concerned on the issue and no one should take political advantage of it.

"The Government has been continuously demanding inclusion of 865 border villages in Maharashtra and a high power committee of all the party members has been advising the State Government to fight in the Supreme Court," Rane said.
