Maha plans new milk regulatory body

State mulling milk authority to control soaring prices

PTI | May 19, 2010

Maharashtra government is planning to set up a regulatory authority to control soaring milk prices in the state.

"We are planning to set up a regulatory authority to control milk prices so that the consumers do not suffer every time," minister for animal husbandry, dairy development and fisheries, Nitin Raut said.

Mumbai's daily milk requirement is 54 lakh litres, of which 30 per cent is from government dairies and remaining milk is supplied by the private players, he said.

"The government has no direct control over the private firms and the regulatory authority would serve the purpose. It would also ensure proper prices are paid to farmers who sell milk," Raut said.

The state government is also holding a meeting with Mother Dairy and National Dairy Development Board tomorrow to chalk out a State Dairy Plan with special focus on Mumbai, Raut said.

"Mumbai has the biggest milk and milk products market and we want to take help from Mother Dairy to design a plan on the lines of Delhi so that the need would be fulfilled," the minister said.
