Manipur government to takeover NH-53 from BRO

Highway has been under BRO undertaking since 1968

PTI | June 16, 2010

The Manipur government will now look after the development and improvement of the National Highway 53 (Imphal-Jiribam-Silchar road) which has been under the care of the Border Road Organisation (BRO) ever since 1968, officials said today.

The decision to takeover the highway from the BRO was taken during a cabinet meeting presided over by Chief Minister O Ibobi Singh here last evening, they said.

The state public works department will see the development and improvement of the road with state funds, but the state government would urge the union ministry of shipping and transport for reimbursement of the funds spent on NH 53.

The NH 53 is a major link between Manipur and neighbouring states after NH 39 (Imphal-Dimapur-Guwahati), where the All Naga Students Association Manipur (ANSAM) had launched indefinite economic blockade since April 11.
