Wajahat Habibullah, the newly appointed chairman of the National Minorities Commission today said he would soon meet the union home minister P Chidambaram as well as the CBI Director to take up the case of nine youths from Malegaon, arrested for alleged involvement in 2006 blast.

Talking to reporters here, Habibullah said in the wake of Swami Aseemanand's confession about his involvement in the Malegaon blast, the nine youths should be set free.

"We came to Mumbai to discuss the issue with police officials, State Home MInister, minorities affairs minister, NGOs and the families of those arrested," Habibullah said.

Commission also met the nine accused at the Arthur Road jail here.

"The commission will act as a catalyst to provide justice to these youths," he said. "I will meet the union home minister and the CBI Director in this regard soon," he said.

This apart, he said, the Commission (comprising Saeeda Imam and senior journalist Vinod Sharma besides him) discussed the socio-economic situation of minorities in the state.
