The Bharatiya Janata Party is now projecting Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi as its role model as it brainstorms 'good governance' at a conclave in Mumbai on June 5-6. The meet, to be attended by senior party leaders – especially chief ministers and deputy chief ministers, will also formulate a charter of good governance.

Modi will deliver the keynote address, immediately after the inauguration by party president Nitin Gadkari, and list all his government's initiatives than can be replicated in other states.

Former Goa chief minister Manohar Parrikar, who is the convener of the party's new governance cell, told a press conference here that it was fitting that the conference should start with him, as he was the senior-most among the BJP chief ministers and occupies an important place in the party.

Performance of the governments in these states will come under scrutiny to help issue directions for the clear-cut initiatives they should undertake as part of the 'Suraj Sankalp' (good governance commitment) announced by Gadkari at the Indore national executive.

Parrikar said the charter would be made public but not the slip-ups of various governments that come to light in the conference as they would be meant for only the party president for the correctives.

He said issues like implementation of the party manifesto, coordination between the party organisation and government and how to keep alive links with the support base will be discussed in the conference to be held at the Rambhau Mhalgi Prabodhini at Bhayander.

The conference would focus on review of some very noteworthy and innovative welfare and development initiatives that can be emulated in other states, he said, claiming that this was "first of its kind initiative by any political party in India.

The conference will be attended by all chief ministers, deputy chief ministers and a score of ministers of the BJP and BJP-alliance states as also by the state presidents and organising secretaries of the states. Also invited are general secretary (organisation) Ramlal, former Maharashtra deputy chief minister Gopinath Munde and former Delhi BJP chief Harsh Vardhan.

The conference will conclude with the valedictory address by L K Advani. Lok Sabha opposition leader Sushma Swaraj will speak on government-opposition interface and Rajya Sabha opposition leader Arun Jaitley will deliberate on administration. Former finance minister Yashwant Sinha will present the charter of good governance, based on the brainstorming, at the concluding session, Parrikar added.

He would be assisted in the endeavour that will enable the governance cell to decide how to go about in future by BJP general secretary Jagat Prakash Nadda, Vinay Sahasrabuddhe, personal secretary of the party president, and Nirmala Sitharaman, one of the party spokespersons.
