Modi slams govt on Maoists, terrorism issues

Says Centre is just holding meetings on issues, while people are dying

Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi has slammed the Central government on security issues saying that people are getting killed in the violence of Naxals and terrorists while the Centre is just holding meetings on the issue.

"They (Union government) have not been able to fulfill the responsibility assigned to them. Day and night we are witnessing naxal attacks and terrorists attacks and hundreds are getting killed everyday. And the government is just holding meetings and making false promises," Modi, speaking at a function in Nani Karol village in Surat last night, said.

"Doesn't the common man deserve security? Shouldn't the common man live a peaceful life? Shouldn't the common man get benefit of development? No, they (Central government) only have time for dirty game of politics," Modi said.

The chief minister's comment comes in the backdrop of the derailment of Gyaneshwari Express train in West Midnapore district of West Bengal on Friday last in which over 140 people died. It has been alleged that the derailment had been caused due to sabotage of railway track by Naxals.

Last month, 76 police personnel were killed in an ambush in one of the deadliest attacks in years in Dantewada of Chhatisgarh.

Modi also criticised the Union government for its anti-farmer policy and accused it of adopting step-motherly treatment towards Gujarat state. .

On the issue of cotton exports ban, Modi said, "By imposing ban on cotton exports the Centre has served a death-blow for the cotton-cultivators. Gujarat?s farmer produces high-quality cotton, which is in great demand across the world over. Farmer of Gujarat has to bear losses to the tunes of Rs 2,000 crore".

Giving an instance of step-motherly treatment to Gujarat, Modi said, "If Gujarat gets coal from the mines located in Nagpur in neighbouring state of Maharashtra, it will generate cost-effective electricity in the state."

"But the Central government does not allow us to get coal from Nagpur and Gujarat is compelled to procure poor quality of coal from Bihar and Jharkhand for its coal-based thermal power stations located in Ukai, Wanakbori, Gandhinagar and other places in the state," he added.

"People of Gujarat have to bear additional burden of Rs 1,000 crore due to Centre's decision to raise prices of natural gas, which is another example of ill treatment to Gujarat," Modi alleged.

Modi said this at an inauguration of 250 mega watt power project of Gujarat Industries Power Company Limited.
