National infant mortality rate reduces further

Lowest IMR recorded in Goa and Kerala

The infant mortality rate (IMR) has dropped down three points from 50 to 47 infant deaths per 1,000 live births during 2010. The IMR for rural areas has dropped by four points from 55 to 51 while the urban rate now stands at 31 against 34/1,000 previously.

The latest sample registration system (SRS) bulletin’s report released on Wednesday by the ministry of health and family welfare reveals that IMR has dipped. Lowest IMR of 10 infant deaths has been recorded in Goa while Kerala stands second to Goa in least IMR 13 per 1,000 (10 in Urban Kerala).

According to the ministry of health and family welfare, Madhya Pradesh has the highest IMR of 62/1,000 followed by UP and Odisha with 61/1,000 IMR. States/UTs of Assam, Bihar, Chandigarh, Haryana, Rajasthan, and Meghalaya still have IMRs more than the national average of 47.
