Ministry to focus more on wildlife conservation

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has given nod for a separate department dedicated to wildlife and forests, distinct from the one for environment, in the ministry of environment and forests.A report in The Indian Express said that this demand of conservationists was met on Thursday.

The department was created to give a sharper focus to issues related to wildlife conservation at a meeting of the National Board for Wildlife chaired by the PM.

The setting up of a new department would mean that more officials would be dedicated to wildlife and more funding to wildlife issues, the report said. The Board met with the PM after a gap of almost three years. The PM expressed concern on tiger moralities and mining in protected areas.
