A new train to Bangladesh

This time, it will connect Agartala with Akhaura

PTI | February 15, 2010

The Tripura state capital will be connected with Akhaura railway station in Bangladesh, by 2014, official sources said.

The decision for linking Agartala station with Akhaura, just 13 km from here, was taken during Bangladesh Prime Minister, Sheikh Hasina's recent visit to New Delhi, the sources said.

During Sheikh Hasina's visit to New Delhi, both the countries on January 12 agreed that a railway line be built between Akhaura in Bangladesh to Agartala, which addresses India's demand for transit through Bangladesh as Kolkata-Dhaka-Akhaura railway connectivity already exists.

The railway track from Lumding in Assam to Agartala is also to be converted from narrow gauge to broad gauge and the railway line extended upto bordering town Sabroom in South Tripura district by 2014, the sources said.
