Kerala government today informed the High Court that Jamaath-e-Islami, an alleged fundamentalist organisation, was under its close surveillance, but no anti-national activity had been reported against it so far.

Stating this in its counter-affidavit on a PIL seeking a ban on the outfit, the government submitted that so far no cases had been registered against Jamaath-e-Islami.

Intelligence wing had looked into literature published by the organisation and the preliminary report did not reveal anything adverse which warrants its seizure or banning, the government stated.

A high-level meeting of the government decided Additional DGP (Intelligence) will closely watch activities of the outfit to find out whether any anti-national ideologies were being propagated and a report would be filed before the government within a month. The government assured that an additional affidavit would be filed based on the report.

Additional chief secretary and home secretary K Jayakumar today appeared before a division bench comprising Chief Justice J Chelameswar and Justice P N Ravindran complying with its June 28 order directing him to explain reasons for delay in filing the counter-affidavit.

The PIL was filed by Islam Mada Probhadaka sangam, a religious organisation, and had been pending for over a year.

When the matter came up for hearing on June 28, the government sought more time to file its counter-affidavit following which the bench directed the Home Secretary to appear before it today.

The bench posted the matter to second week of September.
