No more by-elections for BSP till 2012

Party will not contest assembly or LS by-elections as it will concentrate on 2012 assembly elections

Uttar Pradesh chief minister and BSP supremo Mayawati today said her party will not contest any by-election to the Lok Sabha or the state legislature and instead concentrate on the 2012 assembly elections.

"With an objective of expanding party's base and strengthen the organisation before 2012 assembly polls..., the BSP Supremo has decided not to contest any by-election for Lok Sabha and the state assembly further," a party spokesman said here.

However, the party would contest by-elections to Rajya Sabha and the state legislative council, he said.

On the BSP's victory in Doomariyaganj by-election, Mayawati said the outcome proved that people are "fully satisfied with the policies and programmes of the BSP government."

"Party's victory in majority of the by-elections held after Lok Sabha polls has exposed the canard being spread by the opposition parties that the BSP was finished," she said in a statement.

She alleged that in a bid to prevent BSP gaining power at the Centre, BJP, Congress and SP entered into a tacit understanding.

Mayawati alleged that these parties transferred their votes to each others winning candidates in a bid to ensure defeat of BSP nominees during Lok Sabha polls.

"The conspiracy of the opposition parties got exposed immediately after the Lok Sabha election and this was the reason why our party won 13 out of 16 recent by-elections," Mayawati said.
