NTPC’s 2,100 MW Farakka thermal power station is the first plant in the country to receive its first batch of imported coal through a national waterway.

According to a news report in The Hindu Business Line, the first fleet of barges carrying imported coal has arrived at the feeder canal jetty at Farakka from Haldia through National Waterway I and delivered directly to the coal stockyard through conveyor belts.

The project targets to ferry three to seven million tonnes of imported coal annually from Haldia port to Farakka on the Ganges in Murshidabad district of West Bengal to avoid congestion in the rail and road transportation system.

Part of the consignment will be used at the Farakka unit and the rest will be transported to NTPC’s 1,340 MW facility at Kahalgaon in Bihar. It will use the merry-go-round rail network between Farakka and Kahalgaon.
