Minister says state govt has no info on investors withdrawing from the firm

Determined to go for mining of bauxite in Kalahandi district in a joint venture with Sterlite Industries (India) Ltd (SIL), the Orissa government today said it has no information about reputed companies withdrawing their investment from Vedanta group.

"The Orissa government has not received any information regarding reputed companies withdrawing their investment from Vedanta Group," Steel and Mines minister Raghunath Mohanty while replying to a written question in the assembly today.

Mohanty's remarks come close on the heels of the environment ministry stating that the multi-billion dollar mining giant has violated environment regulations at its Rs 50,000-crore project in Orissa giving a go-by to tribal rights.

Mohanty said the state government did not receive any information regarding world-wide protest against the Anil Agarwal-led company.

The minister was replying to a question relating to the state government's stand on Vedanta project in the wake of major investors withdrawing their shares from the London-based company.

Stating that the state-owned Orissa Mining Corporation (OMC) would be given mining lease right over bauxite reserve in Niyamgiri hills, the minister said mineral exploration would be carried out through a joint venture company along with the SIL.
