Indians abroad will now be able to register themselves as voters in India under the Registration of Electors (Amendment) Rules notified on Thursday.

The government has also published a new Form 6A for enabling the overseas electors to apply for inclusion in the electoral rolls. They will be enrolled in the constituency in which they resided in India as mentioned in their passport.

Aspirants will, however, have to wait for a while as the government is putting in place the necessary administrative machinery and then bring into force the rules and the Representation of the People (Amendment) Act passed by Parliament last month.

At present, citizens of India who are not ordinarily resident in India are not entitled to get their names registered as voters in assembly or parliamentary constituencies.
