Parl committee on N-liability visits BARC and Tarapur facilities

The panel expressed its satisfaction over the security arrangements at both N-power stations

A Parliamentary Standing Committee deliberating the Civil Liability for Nuclear Damage Bill today visited the Tarapur Atomic Power Station and Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC) in Maharashtra.

The 20-member committee reviewed nuclear, personnel and environment safety, emergency preparedness and other provisions and measures at the two installations, a release by Nuclear Power Corp of India Ltd (NPCIL) said here.

Atomic Energy Commission (AEC) chairman Srikumar Banerjee, who is also secretary in the department of atomic energy, and NPCIL chairman and managing director S K Jain accompanied the panel led by T Subbarami Reddy.

The visiting MPs expressed satisfaction over the security measures at the two installations, the release said.

The delegation is scheduled to visit the Madras Atomic Power Station tomorrow.

NPCIL operates 19 nuclear power reactors with a total installed capacity of 4,560 MW. Three more nuclear reactors, with a total installed capacity of 2,220 MW, are under advanced stages of construction, the release said.

In addition, NPCIL has launched four indigenous pressurised heavy water reactors (PHWRs) with a total capacity of 2,800 MW (700 MW each). NPCIL targets an installed capacity of 20,000 MW by 2020, and tripling it to 60,000 MW by 2032, it added.
