RD ministry wants more banks, post offices in rural areas

Bid to ensure direct payment to NREGS beneficiaries

GN Bureau | February 24, 2010

The central government’s flagship job guarantee programme NREGS has glitches at the delivery point with delay in payments to beneficiaries being the common grievance.

To iron this out the ministry of rural development, the nodal ministry for NREGS, has taken up the matter with department of posts and department of financial services asking them to provide basic infrastructure like more banks and post offices, the minister of state for rural development Pradeep Jain Aditya informed the Rajya Sabha on Tuesday.

He said that the ministry had taken steps to improve the efficiency in payment to workers. Accordingly, wage disbursement to workers through banks and post office accounts had been made mandatory. Around 8.66 crore bank/post office accounts have been opened so far.

ICT- enabled financial transactions in rural areas by using ATM, hand heldhand held devices, smart cards and bio-metrics have also been introduced with the aim to maintain transparency and avoid manipulation and delay in payment of wages to NREGA workers.
