Samajwadi Party, on Tuesday morning, was surging ahead in Uttar Pradesh with leads in 155 seats in the 403-member assembly while Akali Dal-BJP combine appeared set to retain power in Punjab as it was leading in 71 of the 117-member House.

In Uttarakhand, a sea-saw battle was being witnessed between ruling BJP and Congress. Latest trends showed that Congress was leading in 32 seats in the 70-member Assembly and BJP followed closely with 25.

BJP was ahead in the tiny state of Goa by gaining early leads in 9 seats against 2 by the ruling Congress in the 40-member House.

In Manipur, Congress was leading in 19 of the 20 seats for which trends were available in the 60-member Assembly.

In Uttar Pradesh, Samajwadi Party showed tremendous gains leading in 155 seats against 97 won in the last Assembly elections.

The ruling BSP was left far behind, leading in just 87 seats against the 206 seats it had in the outgoing Assembly.

BJP stood at the third position, leading in 60 seats while Congress-RLD combine was ahead in 46 seats.
