CBI special court in Hyderabad extends judicial remand Jagan Mohan Reddy even as supreme court asks CBI to explain why the of YSR Congress president should not be granted bail

GN Bureau | April 29, 2013

Hours after the supreme court issued a notice to the central bureau of investigation (CBI) asking it agency to explain why YSR Congress party chief Jagan Mohan Reddy should not be granted bail, a special CBI court on Monday afternoon dismissed the Kadapa MP’s bail application.

The court extended till May 13 the judicial remand of Reddy and others accused in connection with alleged quid-pro-quo deals in the disproportionate assets case, the PTI reports.

Besides Reddy, the other accused include former minister Mopidevi Venkata Ramana Rao, industrialist Nimmagadda Prasada and senior bureaucrat KV Brahmananda Reddy (all accused in Vanpic aspect of the Jagan assets case), who are currently lodged in Chanchalguda prison. All were produced before the CBI court through video-conferencing.

Andhra Pradesh minister Dhramana Prasad Rao, who is also an accused in the case, appeared before the court.

Reddy was arrested by CBI on corruption charges on May 27 last year. The investigating agency has accused the young MP of getting huge investments from various individuals and firms into his businesses as quid pro quo for the favours granted by the then government headed by his father and chief minister, late YS Rajasekhara Reddy.

Earlier in the day, the supreme court asked the CBI to file its response as to why Reddy, 40, should not be granted bail. The probe agency has been asked to file the reply by May 6.

According to reports, while arguing on behalf of Reddy, his lawyer quoted a recent news report which said a union minister had purportedly suggested that Reddy may be able to "come out of jail” if he joins the Congress.
