The government has constituted a National Advisory Council with Sonia Gandhi as its chairperson. She will hold and status of union cabinet minister. Her term of appointment as the chairperson will start with effect from the date she assumes charge of office.

Sonia assumes the office for the second time. She had resigned the post in April 2006, while the office's term ended on October 31, 2008. Her resignation had come in the wake of the office of profit controversy. The opposition had continually raked up the issue of her position as the NAC chair while being a member of the Lok Sabha. After the passing of the Office of Profit Bill by the Parliament, the office of the NAC chair was created on a par with that of a Union Cabinet minister - which means in her current term as the chair, Sonia will be getting the same salary and emoluments as her other cabinet colleagues.
