The Opposition in Karnataka today withdrew its two-day-old dharna in the Assembly, ending the stalemate over the mode of debate regarding the sudden resignation of Lokayukta N Santosh Hegde.

The Opposition began the dharna well of the house on Tuesday afternoon insisting that the issue be discussed as an adjournment motion and not in a different form as ruled by Speaker K G Bopaiah, crippling proceedings for the past two days.

Leader of Opposition Siddaramaiah of the Congress announced the withdrawal of the dharna "with pain" after their repeated appeal to the Chair to reconsider the decision was not successful, paving the way for discussion as ruled by him.

Earlier as the House met, he said the resignation of the Lokayukta had attracted the attention of people in the entire country and there was no example of a Lokayukta quitting after charging the state government with non-cooperation in the fight against corruption.

Siddaramaiah said people had tremendous confidence in the Karnataka Lokayukta that he would deliver them justice and flocked to him with complaints.

He termed the B S Yeddyurappa government as "most insensitive" and "most irresponsible".
