'Teaching community not as educated as it should be'

Kapil Sibal says only 10% of those who had B.Ed degrees and appeared for TET qualified it
GN Bureau | New Delhi | June 07 2012

Highlighting the need to get the best minds in the teaching profession, HRD minister Kapil Sibal on Wednesday said the teaching community is not as educated as it should be.

He said, “it is ironic that we are talking about teachers’ education instead of discussing the education of children".

Addressing the 59th meeting of Central Advisory Board of Education (CABE), he said, “Only 10% of those, who had B.Ed degrees, who appeared for TET qualified it. So there is definitely some problem.”

A CABE committee has been constituted to develop the framework and processes of the national mission on teachers and training. The committee will include state education ministers and representatives from academics and civil society. It will give special focus to teacher educators and train teachers for inclusive education for children with special needs.
