GN Bureau | June 21, 2010

Ten assembly constituencies in telangana region will go to by-elections on July 27, the Election Commission announced on Monday.

"There are 12 casual vacancies in the state legislative assembly of Andhra Pradesh out of which, in two assembly constituencies viz. 28-Vemulawada and 29-Sircilla, election petitions are pending wherein the petitioners have sought to be declared elected. Therefore there are only 10 clear vacancies in the assembly from 1-Sirpur, 2-Chennur (SC),  04-Mancherial, 15-Yellareddy, 17-Nizamabad (Urban), 20-Koratla, 22-Dharmapuri (SC), 31-Huzurabad, 33-Siddipet and 105-Warangal West assembly constituencies which need to be filled up," the Commission said.

The schedule is as follows:

1. Issue of Notification 02.07.2010 (Friday)
2. Last date of making Nominations 09.07.2010 (Friday)
3. Scrutiny of Nominations 10.07.2010 (Saturday)
4. Last date for withdrawal of Candidatures 12.07.2010 (Monday)

7. Counting of Votes 30.07.2010 (Friday) 08.00 AM

The Justice Srikrishna committee on the vexing issue of separate statehood for Telangana is at work and its report is expected by December 25. While the committee was apparently in favour of postponing the by-polls, necessitated by the resignation of the respective MLAs in support of the demand, the Andhra Pradesh government was said to be against any postponement of polls.

Meanwhile, Chief Election Commissioner Navin Chawla is demitting office on July 28 and wanted to complete the by-poll process in his term.
