West Bengal joins Odisha in opposing NCTC powers

NCTC powers, an infringement on the state powers : Patnaik

West Bengal government on Wednesday said it would oppose the recent Union Home Ministry order on the powers of National Counter Terrorism Centre (NCTC), a day after Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik asked the Centre to review the powers of NCTC

The West Bengal government has written to the Centre expressing its reservation over the Union Home Ministry order on the powers of the NCTC, state secretariat sources said.

"By this(powers of NCTC), anyone can be arrested without giving any intimation (to the state governments). Why the West Bengal government would accept this," the sources said without elaborating.

Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik had yesterday written a letter to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh saying that "the powers of NCTC appear to be an infringement on the powers of the state governments... Therefore I must ask you, to review this order which has draconian overtones".

Patnaik also had a telephonic discussion yesterday with West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee about the powers of NCTC "which seems to be infringing the federal rights of the states," the sources said.

The Union Home Ministry in an order issued on February 3 vested power in the NCTC which, appear to be an infringement on the powers of the state governments in matters of investigation and maintenance of order, Patnaik had said in the letter to Singh.
