Bangladeshi SIM cards in north east a security concern

The Central government today expressed concern over the use of Bangladeshi SIM cards by militants taking advantage of the signals of service providers in the neighbouring country.

"Yes, it is a matter of grave concern and at no cost it shall be allowed as security is the top most priority," Union Minister of State for Communication and Information Technology Gurudas Kamat said on the sidelines of the foundation stone laying function of a postal training centre at Sarusajai here.

Security concerns were to be taken into consideration by all service providers while issuing SIM cards, with thrust on proper verification before issuing them, he said.

The matter would be on the agenda in tomorrow's review meet of BSNL's performance in Shillong, he said.

Kamat said the telecom sector in the country was expanding at a rapid pace and the government has stressed on ensuring quality service to the people even in remote areas.

Post offices in villages and semi-urban areas would be provided solar power connectivity to have better services, he said, adding the target was to provide broadband connection to all post offices in the country.
